Five core issues haunt poor North Carolina communities like Southeast Rocky Mount. They included weak youth opportunities, lack of
employment, crime, inadequate housing and untapped community resources.
That's according to a team of five graduate
students from the school of public health at the University of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill, who launched a study into the problems plaguing the
southeast part of town. They discussed their findings and potential solutions at a forum attended by more than 100 residents of the community.
